Longs for Two Faces, to Live Without Being ‘Hounded’
Greta Garbo, the Swedish film actress, returned yesterday on the liner Kungsholm from Europe, where she spent the Summer. She said she did not know what plans Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer had, but she understood her next film would have a Russian theme and that later she would do a picture based in the Curie family.
During the Summer Miss Garbo and Leopold Stokowski, the conductor, were together in Europe, and she declined to confirm or deny a report that they had been married secretly.
“I never talk about my private life.” she said. “I prefer not to. I am afraid that if I were married you would know about it, since nothing escapes you.”
Discussing her well-known aversion to publicity and newspaper interviews, the actress said she had longed for “two faces, one for the screen and one for my private life, so I could live quietly without being followed and hounded.”
A reporter asked her if she “hated” newspaper men and she replied that she did not, and that she might “like all of you, removed from your jobs and your newspapers.”
During the voyage a girl was born by a third-class passenger, and Miss Garbo confirmed reports she had visited the child in the hospital, adding that she was interested in babies. When asked if she would like to have children of her own, she replied: “The world seems too difficult. I mean partly because of the danger of war in the world. I would not want to raise children" (::::::::::::::::: ???????? :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: missing text :-( :::::::::::::::::)
